Images of Antarctica

Images of Antarctica is a Tasmanian business producing high quality Antarctic photographic products, designed to be inspirational, informative, and promote the preservation of the unique Antarctic wilderness. It was launched by Lyn Irvine and Andy Townsend in August 2004.

Lyn Irvine

Lyn Irvine, marine biologist and nature photographer, has spent three summers and a 14-month winter on the Antarctic continent. During this time, she has been awestruck by Antarctica’s stunning scenery, stranded by wild weather and captivated by gutsy wildlife. Lyn believes that sharing the splendour of Antarctica will foster the protection of this unique land. Her photos have been published in various Antarctic books and magazines and were selected as part of an Australian Antarctic Division exhibition at Parliament House, Canberra, in May 2004.

Lyn lives just south of Hobart with her partner and two young children. She can be found bushwalking, scuba diving or wandering along her local beach.

Andy Townsend

Andy Townsend is a freelance photographer and computer programmer, who has travelled and photographed extensively in Australia, New Zealand, North America, Northern Europe and Antarctica. A committed environmentalist, he believes in the power of the visual image to inspire and educate. Andy has had a variety of work published in diaries, calendars, magazines and books around the world. In 2003 he won an award in the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. He is currently working with other photographers on a book to highlight Tasmania’s threatened wilderness.

When not taking photos in far-away lands, Andy enjoys being in the garden, kayaking and going on long walks on the local mountain with his partner and dog.

Our commitment

Images of Antarctica is committed to the environment. Last year, with the help of our calendar supporters, we were able to donate money to Greening Australia and help plant over 600 new trees in rural Tasmania. These trees will replace the paper used in our calendar production process many times over.

This years calendars were proudly sponsored by Spicers Paper. We use Spicer's Monza satin paper in our calendars and cards. Monza has a high 55% recycled content, including 25% post-consumer and 30% pre-consumer waste, 45% sustainable plantation wood and is Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF). Fibre used in the manufacture of Monza is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified.

Monza is manufactured by one of the world's leading paper producers, Cartiere Burgo. Burgo operates under the coveted ISO 14001 Environmental Certification and (IPPC) Integrated Pollution Prevention Control.
